President Bush Friday quietly signed into law a bill containing about $136 billion in tax cuts denounced by critics on both sides of the aisle as a giveaway to corporate interests.

- Rhep. for the last time. The general fund DOES NOT pay for any expenses of the SSI Trust Fund. What the General Fund pays if the INTEREST it owes the Trust fund for the Bonds the Trust Fund bought.

- The average guy can get an average return. Over time. You still are missing the point. Where in my analysis did I assume a stock portfolio? You keep illustrating a stock portfolio and compare that to my bond portfolio and when the results are different you claim stocks are inferior. Well dah!

- Then I would suggest putting your money your mattress. Oh but wait won't inflation eat your purchasing power. If I buy your Bond yield of 1.84%, which seems reasonable in today's climate. SSI is only getting a return of (1.15%). So how is SSI better?

- hsquared, can't speak for other's but my income has increase at a 7.33% CAGR over the past 25 years. And by my calculations, my ROR on my SSI investment is a big Neg $131k ($494k paid in and $363k paid out).

- Read the thread and the math is wrong. 30k at 6.2% (doubled) for 40 years at 8% is only $421k. Assuming a 2% growth rate in income the balance is only $511k. This all assumes an 8% ROR for SSI, which by law can only invest in Government bonds which yield significantly less than 8%.
